Description:

Music or talk? • “Foreground experience” or “companion experience?” • On-demand streaming or live broadcasting? • “A giant megaphone to draw in audiences,” or a “background” medium? • Muted or vibrant in New Jersey?  Whatever public radio is to its listeners (and there are millions), it remains a vital and part of the American media diet.  In Philadelphia and many other cities more listeners are tuned to National Public Radio’s Morning Edition than any competing program in morning drive time. Likewise, the evening counterpart of All Things Considered is a national news treasure and “must” listening for millions more.

The scope of public radio in the United States is expanding beyond National Public Radio, with outlets drawing on Britain’s venerable BBC, Canada’s CBC, St. Paul-based American Public Media, the Minneapolis-based Public Radio International, and local stations in Philadelphia, New York and elsewhere. All of this on budgets that are impossibly lean, at least in comparison to the costs of producing television.

A distinguished group of insiders will discuss The future of Public Radio on the campus of The College of New Jersey Wednesday, November 30 at 2:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Education Building. Guests will be introduced by Janice Selinger, former Acting Executive Director of NJN Public Television and Radio and Adjunct Professor of Communication Studies at TCNJ. In addition to moderator Gary C. Woodward, the panelists include:

  • Roger LaMay, WXPN, Philadelphia, General Manager and Chairman of the NPR Board
  • Dean Cappello, Executive Vice President & Chief Content Officer, WNYC, New York
  • Eugene Sonn, Audio News Director, WHYY Radio, Philadelphia
  • Kevin Potucek, Advisor and Technical Support, WTSR at TCNJ

Members of the panel have developed or supported a stunning collection of public radio hits, including Studio 360 and On the Media at WNYC, Fresh Air and Newsworks Tonight at WHYY, and World Café and Conversations From the World Cafe at WXPN.

This event open to the public honors the 50th Anniversary of WTSR-FM and is sponsored by the Department of Communication Studies and the School of Arts and Communication. Campus parking is available near Loser Hall.
