COMMTuesday December 2020: Thinking About the Future!

Third Virtual COMMTuesday – Thinking About the Future!

As the semester comes to a close, the Communication Studies Department’s Student Advisory Board hosted their last COMMTuesday of the semester on December 1st, 2020 from 3:30PM to 4:30PM.

To make this last COMMTuesday memorable we granted students the exciting opportunity to be selected to win a Starbucks gift card! To also mark the end of the semester, at 3:30PM we conducted a forum where students could share their feedback on their Communication Studies courses and overall virtual experience.

We wanted to hear what Communication Studies students had to say about how teachers conducted their classes over Zoom and any advice they wanted to give the department for next semester. The feedback was recorded and has been given to the Communication Studies department to be taken into consideration for the spring.

Additionally, we conducted a crash course on how to accomplish S.M.A.R.T. goals to tackle our future career and educational challenges. On the topic of our future, at 4:00PM the Student Advisory Board welcomed a special guest from Widener College who spoke about the benefits of attending graduate school.

Special guest, Kat LeConey, shared her enthusiasm about Widener’s Human Sexuality Study Graduate Program and encouraged students to apply and invest in their future.

Here’s what our Starbucks gift card recipients had to say about their COMMTuesday experience!

“A takeaway I would have was that this COMMTuesday gave me an outlet to voice my opinions on the semester and how we as a department can improve virtual learning. I’m happy to hear that the department is looking into the student’s experience!” – Rebecca Silverman

“Reflecting and giving feedback on this virtual semester I think was a perfect way to go about the last CommTuesday this year. It’s clear that this was an abnormal semester, and adjusting to online learning and teaching was hard on everyone. The S.M.A.R.T. goal was also helpful to learn about and adapt to short-term and long-term goals I will make in the future. This was the perfect segway to the guest speaker from Widener University who discussed graduate school options and made me think about what I want to do when I graduate next semester. Overall, this COMMTuesday was a good way to look back on my last few years as a student in anticipation of my future after undergraduate.” – Emily Lo

Professor Li, a Communication Studies professor at TCNJ, was also in attendance to hear about Widener’s Human Sexuality Study Graduate Program as he is in the process of developing his own course titled, “Sexual Communication: Identity, Relationships, and Health.” The course will cover how people communicate their sexual identities, manage their sexual relationships, and promote their sexual health. Students interested in interpersonal communication, public health, and sexuality studies will find this course particularly interesting.

Professor Li said the following about his COMMTuesday experience:

“The students had an opportunity to learn the application and admission processes directly from graduate program administers. The human sexuality study graduate program at Widener University also provides a concrete example of what our students can do with a degree in communication studies.” – Professor Li

Over the break, the Student Advisory Board will brainstorm new and innovative ideas for our future COMMTuesdays. Be on the lookout for our flyers! Have a good break and see you all next semester!
