About Us

Match your message to your medium at TCNJ. Choose from multiple specializations— digital filmmaking and television, emerging communication technologies, health communication, interpersonal and strategic communication, or mass media and social media —and earn an outstanding education. Our program integrates deep conceptual knowledge with strong practical experience, through close collaboration with faculty mentors whose influence stretches from scholarly research to creative media production.

National Leader

We have been rated the #1 undergraduate communication studies program in the nation—and the reason we won this accolade from the National Communication Association in 2013 is faculty-mentored student achievement. Our students hold the association’s national records for most winners of the Best Paper award and most officers in Lambda Pi Eta, the national honor society for communication studies. Our film students excel by tackling critical public issues in film and video projects that have been exhibited at leading showcases, including the Cannes Internship program, Rehoboth International Film Festival, Newburyport Documentary Festival, NJ public television, and more.

Distinguished Faculty

Students learn the conceptual and technical aspects of conducting research and creating film and video projects from a group of faculty members recognized both nationally and internationally as leaders in documentary film-making, health communication, family communication, and other areas. Our professors are distinguished researchers and filmmakers who guide students through each step of the scholarly and creative process. With their faculty mentors, students have co-authored research papers presented at national and international academic conferences and collaborated on all phases of film and video production, including writing, directing, and producing.

Pathways to Success

Our students consistently apply classroom learning to practical experience—by producing programming for Lions TV and making documentaries on important public issues; and by conducting research on health issues, social media, political campaign news, and family dynamics. Students leverage these achievements into impressive internships and careers at organizations like NBC and MTV; Cinemax and IFC Films; HarperCollins Publishers and Burson-Marsteller; Goddard Space Flight Center and the National Cancer Institute. And the list of graduate schools accepting our student scholars for advanced study is truly noteworthy: UPenn, NYU, Columbia, Syracuse University, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, and many more.
